Timor-Leste will host, between July 26 and 30, 2027, the IX International Congress on Environmental Education of Portuguese-Speaking Countries and Communities in Oe-Cusse Ambeno. This will be the first edition of the congress held in Asia. The event is promoted by RedeLuso – Lusophone Network for Environmental Education, in partnership with the Government of Timor-Leste and the Special Administrative Region of Oe-Cusse Ambeno.
The congress will focus on the theme "Environmental Education weaving and strengthening bonds of interculturality for peace, sustainability and cooperation among the peoples of the Lusophone world." The meeting aims to place Environmental Education at the center of the response to challenges such as climate emergency, biodiversity loss and the increase in social inequalities. The program will be organized around four axes: interculturality, peace and human rights; governance, participation and eco-citizenship; Environmental Education facing different crises; and green and blue economy.
The preparation of the congress is already underway. In July, a mission from the organization traveled through Dili, Ermera and Oe-Cusse, establishing contacts with government officials, universities and local communities. The official launch took place on July 23 in Oe-Cusse, and a local coordination committee was established. The organization intends for the congress to go beyond the scientific dimension and directly involve communities, youth and Timorese traditional knowledge.
Registrations are already open and the submission of abstracts runs until September 15, 2026. The last edition of the congress was held in Manaus, Brazil, in 2025, where Timor-Leste's candidacy to host the ninth edition was confirmed.
