EU announces 200 million investment in Greenland and reinforcement of cooperation after Trump's pressure

SAPO Notícias7 September 2026 at 15:35

The European Commission announced a 200 million euro investment in Greenland, during a two-day visit by President Ursula von der Leyen to the Arctic island. This autonomous territory of Denmark has been the subject of growing interest from the United States, in a context of geopolitical tensions in the region.

The investment comes following pressure from Donald Trump, who expressed interest in acquiring Greenlandic territory. Von der Leyen responded with a reinforcement of European cooperation with Greenland, considering the region "more than just a partner for Europe".

The president of the European Commission spent two days on the island, where she met with local authorities and announced concrete measures to support the economic and social development of the territory. This visit marks a significant shift in the European approach to the Arctic region.

The 200 million euro investment aims to strengthen ties between the European Union and Greenland, at a time when geopolitical competition in the Arctic region is intensifying. The EU thus intends to affirm its role as a strategic partner of Greenland, countering the interest shown by the Trump administration.
