The Sintra Municipality announced this Monday the delimitation of a demarcated zone in the Serra de Sintra, near Azóia, after the detection of Fusarium circinatum, a quarantine fungus that constitutes a forest pest and can affect various pine species and the species Pseudotsuga menziesii. The presence of this fungus can cause damage and mortality in trees.
The demarcated zone consists of an infected area and a buffer zone, and will be monitored by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests for a minimum period of two years. During this period, the removal of woody material from the covered area is prohibited, except in situations provided for by current legislation and subject to compliance with specific conditions for wood transport and treatment.
The owners and forest managers covered must comply with the protection measures determined by the authorities, and non-compliance with the rules may result in administrative offense liability.
