Dairy sector "deserves particular attention" and new support measures are being prepared

The Portuguese Government recognized that the dairy sector deserves particular attention given the escalation in production costs and the drop in prices paid to producers. A new intervention of 20 million euros, co-funded by the EU, is being prepared to support farmers affected by the increase in fertilizer costs, with support of 43 euros per hectare in irrigated land and 18 euros per hectare in dryland. An emergency support of 9.4 million euros from the Agricultural Reserve is also being prepared. The drop in milk prices since the beginning of the year will cost national producers around 72 million euros, with the average price paid to producers falling to 0.447 euros per kilogram, the lowest value since the beginning of the year.
