The mayor of Porto City Council, Pedro Duarte, lamented the death of former president Nuno Cardoso, describing him as someone who "indubitably marked" the city's life. Pedro Duarte published a message on social media Instagram expressing "deep sadness" at the news and recalling that, just this year, he awarded Nuno Cardoso the Medal of Honour of the City as recognition for his career and contribution to Porto.
Nuno Cardoso died today in the early hours at the age of 64 at Hospital de Santo António, in Porto. He was president of Porto City Council between 1999 and 2002, having taken over the position from Fernando Gomes, who left for the Government.
An engineer by profession, Nuno Cardoso was responsible for decisive portfolios for the city, including the coordination of Porto 2001 – European Capital of Culture and the Porto Metro project. Born in Peso da Régua, in the district of Vila Real, he was also a university professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and president of Águas do Douro e Paiva.
Pedro Duarte, who won the local elections of October 2025 in which Nuno Cardoso was also a candidate for the coalition Nós Cidadários!/PPM, sent heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the former council leader.
