Ficocables moves forward with six-month lay-off and Sindel meets with management

Jornal Económico7 September 2026 at 13:09

Ficocables is going ahead with a lay-off process lasting six months, taking effect in September. The National Union of Industry and Energy (Sindel) reported that it has been summoned by the company for a meeting this Monday, the 7th, intended for information and negotiation of the measures to be applied in the process.

Sindel publicly lamented this additional lay-off process and expressed its commitment to doing everything to ensure workers' rights are fulfilled. The union stated that it will defend workers at this negotiating table, seeking to ensure the process affects the fewest number of workers possible and proceeds in a fair and balanced manner.

Sindel also guaranteed that the effort will be distributed equitably among the workers covered. In a lay-off situation, workers are entitled to receive the higher value between two-thirds of their salary or the Guaranteed Minimum Monthly Salary (RMMG), currently set at 920 euros.

The union called on all members to send their questions to [email protected], ensuring support in defending their rights and all necessary information about the process.

Dairy sector "deserves particular attention" and new support measures are being prepared

The Portuguese Government recognized that the dairy sector deserves particular attention given the escalation in production costs and the drop in prices paid to producers. A new intervention of 20 million euros, co-funded by the EU, is being prepared to support farmers affected by the increase in fertilizer costs, with support of 43 euros per hectare in irrigated land and 18 euros per hectare in dryland. An emergency support of 9.4 million euros from the Agricultural Reserve is also being prepared. The drop in milk prices since the beginning of the year will cost national producers around 72 million euros, with the average price paid to producers falling to 0.447 euros per kilogram, the lowest value since the beginning of the year.
