UN demands accountability after 23 deaths at US immigration centers

Euronews Portugal7 September 2026 at 11:55

The United Nations demanded accountability after the occurrence of 23 deaths in immigration centers in the United States. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed concern about the conditions in these detention centers.

A joint report by Human Rights Watch and Physicians for Human Rights, published in June, indicated that the rate of people dying under ICE custody reached its highest level in more than a decade. The document comes at a time of tightening migration measures implemented during the Trump administration.

Human rights organizations warned about the precarious health and safety conditions in the detention centers. The UN called for an independent investigation into the circumstances that led to the deaths and for measures to be taken to protect the rights of detained migrants.

OECD exams for 15-year-old students: PISA 2025 report results to be released this Tuesday

The OECD releases this Tuesday the results of the PISA 2025 report, an international exam administered every three years to 15-year-old students in 90 countries, assessing competencies in mathematics, language, and sciences. The educational community and political authorities await the data with anticipation, after the 2022 results — the first after the pandemic — were considered devastating. On that occasion, Spain recorded declines in all three assessed competencies, although less pronounced than in other neighboring countries. With the publication of PISA 2025, it will be possible to determine whether student performance improved, remained stable, or worsened.
