The Fortress of Valença has been selected for the Grand Final of the New 7 Wonders of Portugal, having secured qualification in the Castles category on September 5. The announcement was broadcast live on television.

The final gala is scheduled for September 12, 2026. The fortress's passage to the final was the result of a strong mobilization by the local community, emigrants and visitors.

The Fortress of Valença holds rich historical heritage with medieval roots. Its current configuration dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, having been during the Restoration Wars one of the most strategic and impenetrable defensive points in Alto Minho, contributing to the defense of Portugal's sovereignty and independence.
