Sócrates Files Criminal Complaint for Alleged Perjury Against Star Prosecutor Who Led Operation Marquês

Expresso7 September 2026 at 10:47

José Sócrates, former Portuguese prime minister, filed a criminal complaint against prosecutor Rosário Teixeira, accusing him of perjury during a trial. The complaint was addressed to the Attorney General, requesting the opening of an investigation into whether the magistrate lied.

The prosecutor in question is Rosário Teixeira, who was the head of Operation Marquês, the judicial process that investigated José Sócrates for suspected corruption, tax fraud and money laundering.

According to the complaint filed by Sócrates, Rosário Teixeira allegedly lied during the trial by denying that he had any contacts with journalists before being arrested in 2021. The former prime minister argues that this alleged falsehood in testimony constitutes the crime of perjury.

This complaint comes amid multiple controversies surrounding Operation Marquês, a case that followed José Sócrates for years and which concluded with its dismissal in 2023, by decision of the Supreme Court of Justice.
