Jornal O Almeirinense7 September 2026 at 10:22

The Cine-Teatro de Almeirim hosts, on September 25, the premiere of the film "Damas," directed by Cláudia Alves, which recovers the history of Portuguese nursing ladies during the First World War.

The film includes the journey of Eugénia Manoel, also known as Eugénia Manoel Atalaya, one of the great benefactors of Benfica do Ribatejo. She joined the group of Nursing Ladies of the Portuguese Red Cross, which provided support to the military of the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps in France, between 1917 and 1918.

During that period, Eugénia Manoel served as a nurse and achieved the rank of lieutenant. Her work during the conflict earned her praise from the Portuguese Army, awarded on May 27, 1919.

The film follows the story of a group of ladies from Portuguese high society who volunteered to go to France as Red Cross nurses. In addition to caring for wounded and sick soldiers, the nursing ladies were given the mission to build a hospital.
