Germany: far-right achieves 44% in the state of Saxony-Anhalt

The German far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) achieved an overwhelming victory in the regional elections held this Sunday in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, in Germany. According to electoral forecasts, the AfD reached 44% of the votes.

This result places the AfD well ahead of the CDU party, which currently leads the government in the state and obtained only 18% of the votes, according to the same data. The difference between the two parties is thus 26 percentage points.

Saxony-Anhalt is one of the sixteen states that make up Germany, and the results of these regional elections reflect the growing strength of the far-right in the country. The AfD party has been gaining ground in various German states in recent years, but this result represents one of its most significant victories.
