Australia intends to advance legislation that allows users to deactivate social media algorithms. The objective is to force major technology companies to provide an option to deactivate automated recommendation systems.
The measure aims to give users greater control over the content they view on digital platforms. Currently, many users do not have the possibility to access a chronological feed, being automatically directed to content selected by algorithms based on their likes and behaviors.
This proposal comes in the context of growing concerns about the impact of algorithms on mental health and the dissemination of information on digital platforms. Australian authorities believe that requiring a non-algorithmic alternative may contribute to a more transparent experience.
If implemented, Australia could become one of the first countries to implement such a law, potentially influencing other jurisdictions to consider similar measures to regulate major technology companies.
