"The Government has room to lower fuel prices further, obviously. It's all a matter of choices"

CNN Portugal7 September 2026 at 09:59

Fuel prices rose again in Portugal, with gasoline reaching its highest level in four years. This increase has a direct impact on Portuguese consumers' wallets, who face growing costs at filling stations.

Vítor Costa, executive editor of CNN Portugal, commented on the situation and argued that the Government has alternatives to reduce the burden of this increase on consumers. According to him, there are options available to mitigate the effect of higher prices.

The journalist noted that the Executive has room to further lower fuel prices, considering it is a question of political choices. A reduction in prices could be implemented if there was political will for it.

However, Costa warned that these measures would have consequences. If the Government chose to reduce fuel prices, it could lose budgetary margin to increase pensions or to improve public accounts. Still, the executive editor emphasized that alternatives always exist.
