Volcanic eruption in Indonesia leaves 170 thousand passengers stranded

SAPO Notícias7 September 2026 at 05:44

The eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano in Indonesia caused the closure of airports in the country, leaving approximately 170 thousand passengers stranded. Jakarta's main international airport and three other airports extended the closure until today due to volcanic activity.

The eruption has already affected more than 1,500 flights, causing major impact on air transport in the region. The authorities decided to keep the airports closed as a security measure given the cloud of ash and particles released by the volcano.

Anak Krakatau, located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra, is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. This eruptive event occurs in a context of constant monitoring of volcanic activity in the Indonesian archipelago, which is situated in the so-called Ring of Fire of the Pacific.
