The Australian Government intends to require social media platforms to allow users to disable content personalization algorithms, Communications Minister Anika Wells announced today.
The measure aims to give users greater control over the type of content they view on digital platforms, allowing them to opt for a standard chronological experience instead of algorithmic recommendations.
The proposal comes in the context of growing concerns about the negative effects of algorithms on mental health and the spread of misinformation, especially among young people.
If approved, the legislation would represent one of the most ambitious measures worldwide in regulating the power of major technology companies over the digital experience of users.
