An investigation led by the Spanish Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) discovered that certain components of breast milk are associated with a lower presence of antibiotic resistance genes in babies' intestines. The study analyzed how elements of human milk, such as oligosaccharides, proteins, and fats, influence the gut microbiome of newborns.
The results indicate that breastfed babies have a lower prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes in their gastrointestinal tract compared to babies fed with infant formulas. This discovery suggests that breast milk may play a protective role against the development of bacterial resistance in the early stages of life.
The research involved the analysis of fecal samples from newborns and the characterization of breast milk components, identifying which specific substances contribute to this protective effect. Scientists believe that breast milk oligosaccharides, among other compounds, can modulate the intestinal microbial community in a way that reduces the selection of resistant bacteria.
This study has significant implications for public health, considering that antibiotic resistance is one of the greatest global health threats.
