Trump could be stuck for another six months in a "war without end" with Iran, warns former Pentagon chief

CNN Portugal6 September 2026 at 21:30

The former US Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta, warned that President Donald Trump could be stuck for another six months in a conflict with Iran, which he considered to be a "war without end". Panetta criticized the situation as a "terrible impasse", with no clear exit for a confrontation that has already lasted more than six months.

The former Pentagon chief expressed particular concern about the instability in the US military command, suggesting that this weakness could further complicate the resolution of the conflict. Panetta's statements come at a time of growing tension between Washington and Tehran.

The war of words and military tensions between the two countries show no signs of resolution, leaving experts and former military officials concerned about the escalation of the conflict. The situation remains at an impasse that, according to Panetta, could extend for another six months.
