Trump's envoys consider conversations with Zelensky 'very significant'

Eco6 September 2026 at 19:35

Trump's envoys said on Sunday that the first talks in Kiev with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky were "very significant" and allowed them to "learn a lot." Steve Witkoff described the conversations as "very significant," hoping to "continue this for as long as necessary," while Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, said the trip opened new avenues to move forward.

The two White House representatives met with Zelensky for the first time in Kiev, after being received the day before at the Kremlin by Russian leader Vladimir Putin. After the meeting in Kiev, a session of talks began involving the two US envoys, the Ukrainian delegation and European Union national security officials.

On Friday, Trump stated that Witkoff and Kushner would bring Moscow and Kiev "a proposal to end the war" that began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
