The FIFA spokesperson confirmed to the France-Presse (AFP) agency that Gianni Infantino will run for re-election as president of the organization, a position he has held since 2016. The announcement had been made by Infantino himself in April, and according to the spokesperson, "nothing has changed" since then, with the election expected to take place in March 2027, in Morocco.
The 56-year-old Italian-Swiss has faced an internal crisis after the disclosure of a plan to allow private capital entry in the commercialization of international football competitions, through a company called FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). This failed plan resulted in the loss of support from some federations.
Infantino has been pressured to resign, notably by his UEFA counterpart, the 58-year-old Slovenian Aleksander Ceferin, who, although widely seen as a potential opponent, expressed commitment to UEFA.
Currently, Infantino is the only candidate for the FIFA presidency, with the deadline for submitting candidacies set for November 18.
