The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that she will travel to Greenland as a sign of support for the island. The trip comes in the context of diplomatic tensions between Greenland and the United States, after the US President, Donald Trump, expressed interest in acquiring the autonomous territory from Denmark.
The trip was announced during von der Leyen's speech at the annual World Economic Forum meeting, which is taking place in Davos, Switzerland. The President of the European Commission will use the occasion to strengthen the partnership between the European Union and Greenland.
During her speech in Davos, von der Leyen stated that the European Union was preparing a "strong European investment boost" in Greenland. This investment aims to strengthen security in the Arctic, a region that has been gaining strategic importance at the geopolitical and economic level.
The EU's initiative comes as a response to recent international developments regarding Greenland, representing a gesture of European solidarity towards the island territory which, although autonomous, formally belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark.
