Germany prepares plans to strengthen defense against Russia's "hybrid attacks"

Jornal Económico6 September 2026 at 15:15

The German government has drawn up security plans to strengthen the country's defenses against Russia's "hybrid attacks," following the recent drone incident at Leipzig airport, which Berlin attributed to Moscow. Germany's Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, stated that these attacks include drones loaded with explosives targeting airports, agents operating in German cities, cyberattacks on networks, and sabotage against infrastructure, describing them as an everyday reality.

Dobrindt noted that although an increase in these attacks is anticipated, the country will be capable of defending itself. His ministry has prepared specific plans to improve protection against drones and cyberattacks, which include new rapid response units to protect airspace over major transport hubs, airports, railway stations, and Berlin's government district.

Companies that manage critical infrastructure, such as water and electricity supply and defense sector contractors, will also receive legal authorization to actively defend themselves against drones, according to the Interior Ministry.

A national protection shield called "Cyberdome" will also be created, which will consist of a dense network of digital sensors designed to detect and intercept cyberattack attempts, given the hundreds of computer attacks against German companies recorded in recent months.
