The State of Pernambuco was ordered to pay R$ 150 thousand in moral damages to Anderson Gabriel da Silva, 25 years old, who was wrongfully imprisoned for nine months. The decision was issued by Judge Flávia Fabiane Nascimento Figueira, from the Office of the Central Processing Acceleration Unit of the Court of Justice of Pernambuco, and was signed on August 28.
Anderson was detained on January 11, 2025 during a police stop near Boa Viagem Beach, in Recife. The military police officers were executing a preventive arrest warrant issued by the criminal court of Goiana, in the Zona da Mata region of Pernambuco, related to a homicide that occurred in 2023. The young man explained to the police officers that he was innocent, but reported that the police chief refused to hear his version.
After the arrest, Anderson was taken to the Criminological Screening and Observation Center Professor Everardo Luna, known as Cotel, where he was initially held in the waiting area and later transferred to the cellblock. The young man is a resident of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in the Metropolitan Region of Recife, and was mistaken for the actual perpetrator of the crime, who is from Paraíba.
