Peru declared a state of emergency in five high-security prisons. This measure was taken by the Peruvian government to deal with problems in the country's prisons.
According to the Europa Press news agency, the state of emergency means that the police will maintain control of the prisons. However, the Armed Forces will also be called upon to provide support in these five high-security prisons.
The decision to involve the Armed Forces in controlling the prisons demonstrates the gravity of the situation in the Peruvian prison system. This is not the first time that Peru has taken extreme measures to try to control violence and disorder within its prison establishments.
