Over 60s among the main victims of 'fake accident' scams

Região de Leiria6 September 2026 at 09:30

People over 60 are among the main victims of scams involving alleged traffic accidents, according to a warning from GNR. Scammers contact victims, often by phone, informing them that they have caused an accident and need to transfer money to cover medical expenses or compensation.

The methods used include creating a scenario of urgency and psychological pressure so that victims act quickly, without time to think or verify the accuracy of the information. Criminals manage to access victims' bank accounts through these fraudulent approaches.

GNR is warning the population about the methods used in these scams, raising awareness especially among older drivers, who are one of the most vulnerable groups. The goal is to raise awareness about the need to always verify the authenticity of these contacts before making any decision.

Among the recommendations made by GNR are to never share bank details over the phone, always confirm information with the relevant authorities, and not act under pressure. GNR reinforces the importance of prevention and reporting any suspicious approach.
