The Spanish government approved a decree to take control of the port of Ceuta and authorize the installation of tents to temporarily house more than a thousand migrants in the Poniente breakwater area. The decree was signed by the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente.
The measure allows the installation of tents on a surface of 16 thousand square meters of public port area, according to government sources cited by the EFE news agency. The objective is to create temporary housing capacity for migrants arriving in the Spanish city.
The government's decision comes after a new migration crisis occurred on Friday at the land border between Ceuta and Morocco, with the mass entry of hundreds of people. Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on Moroccan territory, is frequently a scenario of migration pressure.
The decree aims to respond to the humanitarian urgency created by the influx of migrants, guaranteeing temporary reception while seeking more permanent solutions to the situation.
