Ukraine: Putin says "situation is not easy" to White House envoys

Jornal Económico5 September 2026 at 20:56

Russian President Vladimir Putin said "the situation is not easy" at the start of the meeting with White House envoys in Moscow, in an attempt to revive the peace process with Ukraine. Putin also conveyed his best wishes to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, before starting the negotiations.

The American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner traveled to Moscow and Kyiv over the weekend, on Trump's orders, to seek to end the war between the two countries. The two warring nations announced the suspension of attacks between today and Monday, during the visit of the American representatives.

After the meeting with Putin, the envoys are expected to be received in Kyiv by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which will be the first meeting between the two negotiators and the Ukrainian leader. Witkoff and Kushner have already met several times with Russian authorities.

The trip comes a year after Trump received Putin in Alaska in August 2025, in an attempt to end the war, one of the Republican's campaign promises. The Russian military offensive against Ukraine was launched on February 24, 2022, plunging Europe into the most serious security crisis since World War II.
