The leader of PSD, Hugo Soares, accused the leader of PS, José Luís Carneiro, of living "in the past" and of being "spoiled" by the times when António Costa's Government benefited from increased tax revenues generated by rising fuel prices.
Hugo Soares categorically rejected the socialist proposal to reduce VAT on fuels, considering that this measure is not the most appropriate to support consumers.
In contrast, the PSD's secretary-general argued that support for citizens should continue to be made through the ISP, that is, through the Excise Duty on Petroleum Products, thus maintaining the strategy that has been followed.
This exchange of accusations comes in the context of a broader debate about the best way to support families facing the cost of fuels, with PSD and PS presenting divergent views on the fiscal policy to be applied.
