Politics in stadiums, a historical phenomenon that doesn't stop

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General5 September 2026 at 18:28

On August 23, the Martínez Valero stadium in Elche hosted the second round match of the Spanish League between Elche and Barcelona. The final result, 0-5 in favor of the visitors, ended up going almost unnoticed compared to the incident that occurred moments before the start of the match.

National Police agents intervened against a young man who was carrying an estelada, the Catalan independence flag, in the surroundings of the stadium. The individual resisted the police action, eventually being subdued using physical force.

The police action generated a strong division of opinions among those present and the general public. For some sectors, the force used by the agents was excessive and unreasonable, while others considered that the intervention was fully justified.

This episode highlights the political tension that exists in Spanish society, where the presence of independence symbols in sporting contexts continues to generate controversy and divide opinions.

Former agent of David Corrêa, known as DVD, was a drug trafficking boss in Espírito Santo and was arrested in a luxury apartment of the Vasco player

Edson Vander da Silva Júnior, 32 years old, identified as the drug trafficking boss in Serra, Greater Vitória, was arrested in the luxury apartment of David Corrêa, aka DVD, forward for Vasco da Gama. Messages between the two led to Operation "A Tropa," which had DVD and fullback Hayner Cordeiro, from Vila Nova, as targets. The Civil Police of Espírito Santo revealed that Edson Vander managed the athlete's career and finances. He had already been arrested in August 2024 under accusations of involvement in an attempted homicide that occurred in March of that year, linked to a dispute over control of crime in the Serra Dourada 3 neighborhood. The investigation revealed that the attack was motivated by suspicion that the victim had leaked information to a rival criminal faction, leading to the kidnapping and subsequent attempted homicide.
