New offspring brighten up Tapada Nacional de Mafra

Jornal de Mafra5 September 2026 at 17:03

Tapada Nacional de Mafra is experiencing a period of great wildlife activity, with new boar offspring already exploring the forest. The small striped young can be observed accompanying the females on peaceful walks along the trails of Tapada, where encounters with these animals have become frequent in recent days.

Wild boars, an abundant species in Tapada, can have two litters in the same year. Although births occur mainly between March and April, when food availability is greatest, local conditions favor a second reproductive peak during the summer. The abundance of natural resources and habitat conditions explain the increase in juveniles at this time of year.

Another sign of the changing season is the falling of acorns, which has already begun to mark the valley. With abundant food and cool shade provided by cork oaks, it is common to see animals moving calmly, enjoying the plenty that precedes autumn. For those visiting Tapada, this is a privileged period for observing fauna, with walks at the end of the day or in the early morning hours being the best times for sightings. Tapada Nacional de Mafra recommends that visitors always maintain a safe distance and observe the animals in silence so as not to scare them.
