The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, ordered the suspension of attacks against Russia during this weekend, on the occasion of the visit of envoys from the United States, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to the Russian and Ukrainian capitals. Zelensky announced that Ukraine is willing to respect a ceasefire on aerial attacks against the cities involved in the negotiation process, also guaranteeing the normal functioning of Russian airspace so that the negotiators can land safely.
Shortly before, the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, had ordered the suspension for three days of attacks against the Ukrainian capital, Kiev. Zelensky expected the Russians to do the same regarding Kiev during the weekend, to allow diplomatic talks to proceed without incidents.
However, Zelensky denounced that, before Putin announced the ceasefire, there were bombings against the airports of Kiev and Borispol, considering those attacks to be Russian sabotage against diplomacy. Ukraine closed its airspace to civilian aviation in February 2022, the date of the Russian invasion, so the visit of the American envoys could allow the plane with Witkoff and Kushner to land directly at a Ukrainian airport for the first time.
Donald Trump's envoys are traveling to Moscow to meet with Putin and then proceed to Kiev to meet Zelensky, in what will be the first meeting between the two negotiators and the Ukrainian leader. This trip occurs a year after Trump received Putin in Alaska, in a failed attempt to end the war, one of the American President's campaign promises.
