Zelensky denounces attacks on Kiev airport as Russia's sabotage against diplomacy

Eco5 September 2026 at 13:16

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced a series of Russian attacks on the Kiev and Boryspil airports overnight, describing them as a deliberate and unprecedented act in a long time. Zelensky said the attacks constituted an attempt by Russia to sabotage ongoing diplomatic talks with the United States, having been a response to discussions and preparations for an American plane to reach Ukraine and land at Kiev airport.

The American envoys never made it to Kiev, although Zelensky had said he was expecting them in the Ukrainian capital on Sunday. During this period, Russia responded to the diplomatic measures with Russian-Iranian Shahed drones against the Ukrainian airports.

Trump confirmed that his envoys would deliver a proposal to Russia to end the war during the Moscow visit, predicting "very likely" progress in the negotiations. However, the Kremlin insisted that at present there are no concrete conditions to stop the war and lowered expectations for the meeting.

Ukraine attempted to establish a temporary ceasefire on the front line before Trump's envoys' visit, but this proved impossible due to Russia's refusal. Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine is committed to the path of peace and blamed Russia for the current escalation of hostilities.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the suspension of attacks on Kyiv for three days, coinciding with the visit to Moscow and Kyiv of White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who are carrying a proposal from Donald Trump to end the war in Ukraine. Zelensky also agreed to suspend attacks against Russia during the period that the American representatives are in both countries. Putin is expected to receive the two envoys but has rejected, for now, a possible three-way summit with the US and Ukraine.
