Plastic and paper manufacturers call for predictability in new European packaging rules

Correio da Manhã5 September 2026 at 09:32

Plastic and paper manufacturers are calling for predictability in new European packaging rules. The request comes in the context of drafting new European legislation that will regulate the packaging sector.

The Portuguese Association of the Plastics Industry is one of the sector's voices speaking out on these issues. The association highlights that the sector is committed to the objectives of promoting circularity.

This position indicates that, although manufacturers acknowledge the need for stricter rules, they argue that these must be clear and stable, allowing the sector to plan investments and adaptations in advance.

Tax authority can refund up to 4 years of vehicle tax: find out who can recover this money

The Portuguese Tax Authority published guidance that allows taxpayers with an incapacity degree equal to or greater than 60% to recover road tax (IUC) unduly paid over the last four years, when the loss of exemption resulted from a first medical reassessment that reduced the degree of incapacity below that threshold. The measure applies the most favorable assessment principle and requires that the new certificate relate to the same original clinical pathology. The taxpayer can request a review of the assessments under the General Tax Law, should verify the assessment dates, the vehicle registration anniversary, and compliance with the other exemption conditions, such as the annual limit of 240 euros and use on only one vehicle.

Main Information for the Consumer

ANACOM fined three telecom operators in Portugal — NOS, Vodafone and MEO — a total of 990 thousand euros, for unilateral contractual changes that affected approximately 2.77 million subscribers. The sanctions refer to the introduction of mandatory advertising viewing in television recordings and the lack of adequate notification of customers about the changes, in violation of the legal requirements for one month's prior notice and the right to terminate without costs. The distribution of the fines was 480 thousand euros for MEO, 350 thousand euros for NOS and 160 thousand euros for Vodafone. ANACOM recalls that oversight is essential to protect consumers, but they must individually use the available dispute resolution mechanisms.

Portuguese fill up their cars at a service station in the Spanish city of Badajoz

Many Portuguese travel to the service station in Badajoz, Spain, to fill up their cars with diesel, despite acknowledging that Portuguese fuel is of superior quality. The significant price difference between the two sides of the border makes the cross-border trip worthwhile for consumers, who choose to save money even knowing that the national product is of better quality.
