The Continente supermarket chain published an article with tips for consumers to identify if sea bream is fresh at the time of purchase. This fish continues to be one of the most sought-after in Portugal, valued for its ease of preparation, flavor and nutritional value. National farmed sea bream is raised in saltwater, in open sea, and is available in different sizes and cuts at the brand's fish markets.
The article highlights three main signs to check the freshness of the fish. The eyes should be bright and prominent, not dull or too sunken. The scales should appear shiny and well-adherent to the body, indicating greater freshness. The smell is also an indicator, being mild and pleasant with a sea breeze scent, without overly intense or unpleasant odors.
Farm-raised national sea bream is raised in open sea with exposure to maritime currents and natural water circulation, which allows for a more regular supply throughout the year, complementing the availability of traditional fishing. After purchase, the recommendation is to store the fish in the refrigerator, in a closed container, at a temperature close to 4°C, consuming it preferably within one day to preserve the texture and flavor.
In addition to versatility in preparation, which includes oven, grilled, with salt, fillets or steaks, sea bream is a source of protein, omega-3, B-complex vitamins and minerals such as phosphorus and potassium. For the consumer, visual and olfactory observation at the time of purchase continues to be the best way to ensure the fish is fresh before it reaches the table.
