Trás-os-Montes expects a good harvest in the vintage, but fire leaves marks

The Trás-os-Montes region expects an excellent grape harvest with an increase of about 15% in production for 2026, according to forecasts from the Institute of Vine and Wine, with favorable weather conditions this year. However, fires that devastated the district of Vila Real and Bragança between July and August left deep marks on local wine growers, such as Hélder Martins, who lost 90% of his vineyard in Sonim, and Fernando Faria, who abandoned production this year. In Valpaços, 304 hectares of vineyard were affected, also affecting olive groves and almond orchards. The affected producers, without insurance, are evaluating resorting to government support declared as "natural catastrophe", but maintain their determination to continue fighting for a way of life rooted in agriculture.
