Portimonense Sporting Clube announced on September 4 the preventive and immediate suspension of the players targeted by suspicions of involvement in illegal betting during the 2025/26 season. The Algarve club expressed its "deepest displeasure, sadness and total repudiation" regarding the suspicions, without revealing how many players are involved in the process.
According to newspaper Record, the Disciplinary Board of the Portuguese Football Federation has initiated a process covering 26 people. The facts under investigation refer to the 2025/26 season, in which Portimonense competed in Série D of the Campeonato de Portugal, finishing in 12th place and being relegated.
The club stated that all internal and disciplinary inquiries have already been initiated to determine the full extent of the facts and respective individual responsibilities. Portimonense guaranteed that it will act "unmercifully and with the utmost rigor" and that it will activate all legal and sports mechanisms at its disposal to protect the club's good name and heritage.
