Summer in Redondo: 150 young people, one territory and thousands of years of history

Over 150 students and archaeology volunteers from around the world visited the municipality of Redondo, in the district of Évora, from May until the end of August, participating in various local archaeological projects.

The Redondo municipal council revealed that the archaeology of the region and the Serra d'Ossa area provided these young people with an important learning experience.

The municipality highlighted that participants also acquired knowledge about the historical, cultural and gastronomic identity of the region through these activities.

In addition to international participants, young people from the municipality of Redondo itself were also involved in the archaeological activities carried out during the summer.

Cancer strategy exposed: tumors use antioxidants to "suffocate" the body's defenses

Scientists from the universities of Cambridge and Oregon have discovered a previously unknown mechanism by which tumors evade the immune system: they release large amounts of an antioxidant called peroxiredoxin 1 (PRDX1), which eliminates reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the tumor environment. As T cells need these small controlled amounts of ROS as a chemical signal to activate and fight cancer, the PRDX1 protein "suffocates" them chemically, leaving them inactive. The CRISPR gene editing experiment in animal models confirmed that tumors without the ability to produce PRDX1 were significantly more vulnerable to T cell attack. The mechanism was also validated in humans through the analysis of cell lines, tumor gene activity and surgical fluid. The discovery challenges the traditional view on antioxidants in the oncological context and opens new therapeutic avenues for cancers resistant to immunotherapy.
