A video recorded from an apartment window captured an armed robbery on Rua Dona Claudina, in Méier, in the north zone of Rio de Janeiro. In the footage, three men are approached by armed criminals during the day, and the bandits flee by car after the action. The video was posted on social media last Tuesday by the Méier Residents' Association (AMME).
The episode occurs in a context of great concern from residents regarding security in the region. In a poll conducted by GLOBO, street robberies and thefts were identified as the main problem in the neighborhood, receiving 34.21% of readers' votes. Security came ahead of nine other complaints presented in the survey.
The situation of people experiencing homelessness appeared in second place in the poll, with 18.65% of the votes, followed by sidewalk conservation (11.61%), scarcity of trees (10.38%), traffic (7.04%) and public transportation (5.28%). Other issues were also mentioned by residents as neighborhood problems.
As part of measures to combat crime in the region, Méier and Madureira should receive more intelligent supercameras, in an expansion of the security system in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
