European Union: new custodian seeks to unlock Russian assets

Euronews Portugal5 September 2026 at 09:03

The European Union is seeking a solution to unlock the frozen Russian assets, reopening a debate in Belgium about the fate of these funds. A new custodian is being proposed to try to resolve the political impasse that has prevented a decision on the use of these assets.

The question focuses on the possibility of an EU custodian being able to convince Brussels to move forward with a solution that allows the use of the frozen Russian funds. This new attempt arises at a time when the debate about Russian assets has been particularly sensitive at the European level.

Belgium plays a central role in this process, as a significant portion of the frozen Russian assets is deposited in this country. The debate about who should be the custodian and how these funds should be used remains open.
