The United States sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kiev to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine. Witkoff, the Trump administration's special envoy for the Middle East, had previously been in the Russian capital for meetings with President Vladimir Putin.
The announcement of these diplomatic missions coincided with a moment of violence in Ukraine. Russian attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region resulted in the death of four people during the night, according to Ukrainian local authorities.
The peace talks are taking place in a context of intensified diplomatic pressure, with the United States trying to bring closer the positions of Russia and Ukraine to reach a ceasefire agreement.
