Artificial intelligence helps identify factors that most influence biogas production in landfills

oglobo4 September 2026 at 22:55

A project that combines biotechnology, artificial intelligence and data analysis was developed to identify the factors that influence methane generation in landfills and find ways to improve the performance of biogas collection wells. The initiative promises to increase biogas production and expand the use of urban waste.

The project, called INT 14/2023, has Alvaro Viana as the principal researcher and will be conducted in a real landfill. The initiative has funding from the Carlos Chagas Filho Foundation for Research Support in the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ).

The main idea is to work mainly on wells that present low biogas production. Through data analysis of the landfill, the system should identify the conditions that interfere with gas generation and indicate the appropriate amount of a compound to optimize production.
