The American President, Donald Trump, announced a proposal to end the war in Ukraine and confirmed that his special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, will travel this weekend to Moscow and Kiev. The objective is to resume peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, in an effort to put an end to more than three years of conflict.
Trump acknowledged that the process will not be easy, but highlighted his experience in international mediation, stating that he has already managed to end eight wars during his term. The American President also expressed confidence in the possibility of reaching a peace agreement.
The meetings with the Russian and Ukrainian leaders, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky, respectively, represent the first formal dialogue initiative between the two parties since the collapse of previous negotiations. So far, no details have been revealed about the specific terms of the American proposal.
The international community has been following this new mediation attempt with anticipation, at a time when the conflict in Ukraine continues to cause thousands of dead and displaced, and after months of peace negotiations that failed to advance significantly.
