In Portugal, there is no maximum age to drive light automobiles in category B. The law does not establish a general limit from which it is mandatory to stop driving, but defines a periodic renewal system based on maintaining the driver's physical, mental and psychological aptitude, and not on age alone. The regulation applies to Group 1 licenses, where category B is included.
The driving license must be renewed at 70 years old and, subsequently, every two years, without a specific limit defined at 80 or 90 years old. From the age of 60, the electronic medical certificate becomes mandatory, transmitted to the Institute of Mobility and Transport. From 70 years old, when the evaluation is not carried out by the attending physician, a detailed report of clinical history must be presented. The physician may also set validity periods shorter than two years or request additional tests and psychological assessments when deemed necessary. Repeating the practical driving test is not required.
There are, however, categories where the law defines age limits. Licenses for categories D1, D1E, D and DE, intended for driving passenger transport vehicles, lose their validity when the driver turns 67 and cannot be renewed. There is also a restriction for category CE starting at 67 years old, preventing the driving of vehicles whose maximum authorized mass exceeds 20 tons.
In conclusion, a person aged 80 or 90 can continue to legally drive a private light vehicle in Portugal, provided they renew the license on time, comply with applicable restrictions, and are deemed clinically fit. The control from age 70 onwards is done through more frequent renewals and medical evaluations, without age alone removing the driving entitlement.
