The Greek island of Tilos found an alternative solution to landfills to handle its waste, becoming an example of a waste management system. Euronews went to the site to learn about this innovative approach and assess whether it can be replicated on other islands.
Most small islands have no other option but to bury their waste in landfills, which represents a significant environmental problem. Tilos managed to break this pattern through a system that aims for the complete elimination of landfills.
The island's zero waste project demonstrates that it is possible to implement sustainable alternatives even in isolated territories with limited resources. Tilos' experience is generating interest as a potential model for other island communities that face similar challenges in waste management.
