On June 18, 1986, Volkswagen bought 51% of Seat from the Instituto Nacional de Industria (INI), predecessor of Sepi. The German automotive group obtained full control of the Spanish brand in 1990.

Seat was founded by the Franco regime forty years before the purchase by Volkswagen. Until 1981, the natural international ally of the Spanish brand was the Italian company Fiat, which sold its 42% stake in Seat.
