The Portuguese National Health Service faces a deficit exceeding 600 anesthesiologists, according to warnings from the Order of Doctors. The professional organization states that this is a structural shortage of specialists in the public health sector, and not a sporadic or temporary problem.

The Order of Doctors calls on the government to create incentives that allow these specialists to be attracted to and retained in the NHS. The shortage of anesthesiologists directly affects the surgical capacity of public hospitals and jeopardizes the quality of care provided to patients.

This warning comes after resignations at Hospital D. Estefânia, a unit that has faced difficulties in maintaining its anesthesia teams. The departure of professionals from this hospital is emblematic of a broader problem affecting the entire Portuguese public health system.

The situation reflects a wider trend of specialist doctors leaving for the private sector or abroad, driven by better salary and working conditions. Without concrete measures to reverse this scenario, the NHS may see its surgical response capacity worsen across the country.
