Major fuel price increase: around 15 cents for diesel and 10 for gasoline

Mais Semanário4 September 2026 at 17:40

Fuel prices in Portugal are set to experience one of the biggest increases of the year, with diesel rising by around 15 cents per liter and gasoline by 10 cents. The forecast, advanced by ANAREC, should take effect as early as next Monday, directly affecting those who depend on the car for work or study. With these values, a 50-liter tank could exceed 101 euros, both for diesel and gasoline, according to current averages from DGEG which point to 2.169 euros per liter of simple diesel and 2.142 euros per liter of 95-octane gasoline.

The instability in the Strait of Hormuz, marked by the confrontation between the USA and Iran, continues to pressure oil prices and justify the escalation of international prices. The final average will only be confirmed throughout the day, and may still fluctuate depending on market close.

In the Póvoa de Varzim and Vila do Conde region, the impact should be similar to the rest of the country, varying only depending on the brand and location of the fuel stations. Uncertainty also remains regarding possible adjustments to the ISP (Excise Duty on Petroleum Products), which could mitigate the increase. Without this intervention, the beginning of the week should be marked by another significant increase at the fuel pumps.
