The Portuguese Cinemateca revealed its rentrée programming for the coming months, with retrospectives dedicated to major names in the history of world cinema. Between September and March 2027, the institution on Rua Barata Salgueiro hosts retrospectives of Paulo Branco, Martin Scorsese, Brigitte Bardot, Margaret Tait, Noémia Delgado, Lino Brocka, Rita Azevedo Gomes, Frank Borzage and Hiroshi Shimizu, the latter with a showcase that will be the second largest ever outside Japan.
The retrospective of Paulo Branco, described by the Cinemateca as an "indelible figure of Portuguese cinema," begins on September 11th with Non ou a vã glória de mandar by Manoel de Oliveira, and features the producer's presence at several moments, including a meeting with French actress and director Fanny Ardant. In September, the programming also includes Martin Scorsese, one of the most important filmmakers of the New Hollywood generation of the 1970s.
October brings a tribute to Brigitte Bardot, one year after the actress's death, as well as cycles dedicated to Margaret Tait and the Portuguese Noémia Delgado, linked to the Portuguese Cinema Novo. Lino Brocka, a Filipino filmmaker whose work is practically unknown in Portugal, will be the subject of a retrospective organized in partnership with Doclisboa, with participation from Khavn De La Cruz.
In November, Rita Azevedo Gomes occupies the guest director's chair in a program made in collaboration with the filmmaker. Frank Borzage, master of melodrama, will also be honored between November and January 2027. In December, the retrospective of Hiroshi Shimizu begins, one of the masters of Japanese cinema, with collaboration from the National Film Archive of Japan and journalist Clément Rauger, resulting in the publication of a book-catalogue. The "Journey to the End of Silent Film" cycle, which celebrates the centenary of the first sound film, continues until the end of the year.
