The severe and persistent shortage of human resources is placing the judicial system in Portalegre District under great pressure. Helder Cordeiro, coordinating deputy attorney general of the district, alerted to this situation during the inauguration ceremony of new magistrates of the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Palace of Justice in Portalegre. The official described how reduced court registries manage thousands of cases, resulting in an accumulation of tasks and high psychological pressure on professionals to avoid missing deadlines. According to the magistrate, the continuity of work is exclusively due to the sacrifice and extraordinary resilience of the workers.
Given the lack of human resources and the absence of immediate solutions, Helder Cordeiro advocated for technological modernization, process dematerialization, and the introduction of Artificial Intelligence tools as priority strategic measures. The goal is to automate repetitive administrative tasks and simplify procedures, in order to free magistrates and judicial officers for legal analysis and direct contact with citizens. The coordinator assured that AI is not coming to replace people, but rather to function as a tool to protect workers from excessive bureaucratic burden.
To the new magistrates, Helder Cordeiro promised flexible, transparent, and humanized management, guaranteeing that he will continue to demand staff reinforcement from higher authorities and the Ministry of Justice. The official stated that he will support the region's needs with rigorous data, claiming resources that allow addressing the gaps identified in the functioning of Portalegre's courts.
