The Ministry of Agriculture and the Sea is preparing a pilot project that provides for payment of a fee for each wild boar killed through hunting in areas where an excess of animals is identified. The measure was revealed by Minister José Manuel Fernandes in statements to NS, in Coruche.
The initiative comes as a response to the growth of wild boar populations, which have caused significant problems in several regions of the country. The excess of these animals represents threats to both agriculture and public health.
The minister has not yet specified the amount to be paid for each animal killed, with that information to be defined as part of the pilot project. The implementation of the measure will also depend on the identification of areas with the highest excess of wild boar populations.
