Two people can spend a night in the same garden and receive approximately the same number of mosquito bites, but wake up with completely different reactions. While one barely notices the bites, the other may be covered with large, swollen marks that itch intensely and last several days. This scenario is something most people have already experienced or know someone who has gone through it.
The answer to this difference lies in how mosquito saliva interacts with the human immune system. When a mosquito bites someone, it injects saliva into the skin. The immune system recognizes this saliva as a foreign substance to the body.
Upon identifying the saliva as foreign, the immune system releases histamine, a chemical substance produced by immune cells. Histamine is responsible for the typical allergic symptoms of bites, such as redness, swelling, and itching.
However, the researchers explain that this histamine response only partially explains what happens. Mosquito saliva also contains several other biologically active compounds that interact with the immune system in more complex ways than previously assumed.
